* The Zollverein Industrial Complex in Land Nordrhein Westfalen, historical coal mining site.
* Mining activities stopped in 1986, but thermal water at the site is still pumped up every day.
* The site becomes UNESCO World Heritage Site. The master plan, at this location, specifies an urban attractor, an audience magnet, a landmark: the Design School, by SANAA.
* The heat from the thermal water is used to create an active facade. It means there is no need for insulation - this makes the walls thinner, and no need for a mechanical heater, only a hot water pipe network running through the building skin.
* The windows, instead of being uniformly distributed, they are arranged according to the sun to capture more daylight.
* This unique concept could be used in the future for many other buildings on the site, as long as the natural resource is there.
